Hand to Mouth Habit
We all have heard or experienced weight gain when you stop smoking so I have a few tips to help you feel better about this weight gain and give you suggestions of what to eat and what to avoid when tackling the quit smoking challenge. The hand to mouth habit is the first thing you want to control when quitting smoking.
Try replacing that cigarette with something healthy like carrot sticks or celery sticks. Even pretzel sticks are healthier then smoking a cigarette. That habit of smoking makes a natural movement your body gets use to. Bending your elbow and putting your hand to your mouth. Over years your body naturally becomes accustom to this smokers natural movement.
Breaking this habit is one of the keys to quit smoking. You need to find something to replace either the cigarette used in this movement or to replace the movement with another movement. Replacing the object would be a much easier job for me. So try different things to replace that cigarette with, but try to pick something healthy to eat or something non-toxic you can place in your mouth.
I remember when I quit I just didn’t know what to do with my hands! Cross my arms, twiddle my thumbs, tap my fingers on the desk. What do I do with my hands? Now would be a good time to think about what you might do with your hand to mouth idle time. Do what ever feels natural, do not try to rehearse or over exaggerate with your hand movements. The best thing to do is to forget about it and let what happens happen.
Some of the foods you should avoid when trying to quit smoking is anything with caffeine. Almost everyone likes their morning coffee but try to limit it to one or two cups a day. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that morning coffee is your breakfast either. If your not a big breakfast fan have a piece of fresh fruit or a slice of whole grain toast. My suggestion is if you like the feel of your coffee cup rinse it out and fill it with water. The movement of bringing that cup up to your mouth will help fulfill that hand to mouth habit.
Remember when you take the challenge of quitting smoking, everyday and every minute will be a test of your will power. To quit smoking will be the best health decision you can make for yourself. So don’t give up and just take each day as it comes .
