Just Quit Smoking!
I have to go back 28 years to relate my experience in quitting to smoke. I was 27 years old and my father had just had a heart attack. To experience the feeling of seeing your own parents longevity brings a scary realization that life is too short to let cigarettes rob you of any of those years.
If you grew up in the 60’s and 70’s everyone seemed to smoke. Both my parents smoked and all of their friends smoked. My husband and I smoked along with almost all our friends. It was just the general make-up of society. It was acceptable and somewhat even encouraged.
Well all that has changed in the past 10 to 15 years. Smoking is taboo and frowned upon. We try to teach our kids that smoking is bad and doesn’t make you look cool like we thought it did back in the day. I remember watching TV and movies with actors smoking. It was an acceptable practice.
If you smoke you need to quit and if you are thinking about starting “don’t”. I could give you all the smoking facts and talk about the health risks of smoking, even the money you will save if you quit smoking. But I think we all know the truth smoking is all around bad for us and for all the people we expose to that smoke.
Anyone who wants to quit smoking needs to know, this will be the fight of your life, but also a fight you can win. Twenty eight years ago I took that challenge to quit smoking and will never look back. I know I look better and feel better because of that decision.
The first thing before you decide to quit smoking is make up your mind that you are doing this for yourself. This decision is not for anyone else just yourself. First write down all the reasons you need and want to quit smoking. Then try to write down the reasons you should keep smoking. Hopefully you won’t come up with any reasons to continue to smoke.
I think the greatest advise I could give everyone who is trying to quit smoking is that the urge to light up is very short. That 2-3 minute almost uncontrollable desire to light up will pass . When you get that strong urge; try to find something else to focus your mind on. Each day these urges will become longer between and shorter in duration. Don’t give up remember you will be adding years to your life with each passing day.
